Jesus was intentional in everything He did. Why did He need us to know He was thirsty as He hung on the cross? Discover what His thirst teaches us. In Part 5 of my 7-part video series, “Jesus’ Last 7 Words on the Cross,” we’ll look at why Jesus chose for one of His last words to be, “I am thirsty!

I Am Thirsty

In Christ’s humanity, His body was ready to give out. It suffered intense physical thirst.

But this wasn’t the only reason Jesus cried out, “I am thirsty.”

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”

– John 19:28

Jesus needed to fulfill all Scripture. It wasn’t necessary for us to know He was thirsty. But it was for the guards so that they would offer Him the sour wine as the Psalm 69:21 prophesied He would.

“…for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”

Psalm 69:21

Also, in Psalm 22, God pointed to this moment.

“My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.”

Psalm 22:15

Through King David, God prophesized that Jesus would drink bitterness.

What Do Jesus’ Words Speak to Us Today?

Jesus’ agonizing physical thirst spoke to our spiritual thirst. Our need for Living Water.

Earlier in His ministry, Jesus spoke of spiritual thirst to the Samaritan woman at the well.

When He met her at the well, He asked her for a drink of water (John 4:7).

Then He said to her:

“Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-14

We’re all created as spiritual beings. And without Christ—the Living Water—our spiritual thirst can never be quenched. And we can never truly live.

Without Christ, we merely survive until we die. Eternally.

With Him, rivers of living water spring up from us to eternal life.

And we will never thirst again.
