I’m not a ship builder, but I’m pretty certain that Noah’s ark wouldn’t meet code today.
God told Noah to build a ship so long it would cover 1-1/2 football fields, but only one door? [1]
I can’t see that getting past the ark inspectors today.
Think about having to move all those animals into their stalls and load the ark with enough supplies to feed a zoo and a family for a crazy long time. I don’t think I’m being too lazy when I say, if it were me, I’d want to add at least two more doors — one at each end, like a ferry.
So why would the all-knowing God design only one door?
It’s a Red Thread Clue.
The one door is a picture of the one way to God.
That one way is Jesus Christ.
The one way isn’t through good works, Buddhah, or Muhammad. It’s not even through believing in God or believing that Jesus exists. The demons believe there’s one God and shudder[2], and they know Jesus[3], but they won’t be found in heaven.
The only way to be saved from the penalty of our sins is through faith in the saving work of Jesus — His death on the cross to pay for our sins — just like the only way to get into the ark was through the one door.
Hence, we have our Red Thread Clue:
The one way to be saved from the flood was to enter the ark through the one door. [4]
Likewise, the one way to be saved from the penalty of sin is through faith in the saving work of the one and only Son of God, Jesus Christ.[5]
Jesus even referred to Himself as the door:
I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved.
~ John 10:9
It might seem like an oversight or bad planning when we consider only one door in a ship that big, but, as with everything, God knew what He’s doing, and He does all things well. He designed the ark and our salvation perfectly.
