My story “The Right Size” got published in Focus on the Family’s January 2015 issue of Clubhouse Jr. magazine.
I’m just now moving out of the shocked phase and into dance mode.
I’m grateful to the staff at Focus on the Family, and especially Senior Associate Editor Joanna Echols, for allowing me the privilege of having my story published in their great magazine, and for letting me post the story here on my blog.
What If . . .
I was inspired to write the story The Right Size by my daughter, Brittany.
She’s fallen in love with ceramics and has a gift for it.
One day I imagined her sitting at the potter’s wheel shaping her next creation when Romans 9:20-21 came to my mind:
“On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it?
Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?”
It struck me how easily we assume what would be “for honorable use” and what would be for “common use.”
I thought:
What if the least likely to be honorable
turned out to actually be the most?
I hope you’ll enjoy my story The Right Size and the beautiful illustrations by Sergio DeGiorgi. It’s exciting for me to see the characters come to life through his drawings.
You were created just right!
“Who am I to . . . ?”
Before I submitted this story to Focus on the Family, I looked in the mirror and thought, “Who am I to . . . ?” but it’s not the mirror any of us should be paying attention to — it’s the Potter.
God is the perfect Potter. We can trust in Him.
I didn’t think I could get published in Focus on the Family’s Clubhouse Jr., but it turns out, the Potter made me the right size for the job after all.

Clubhouse Jr. Magazine
Working with Joanna and Clubhouse Jr. magazine was a pure pleasure, and I pray for more opportunities to come.
Speaking of the magazine, if you’re a parent and haven’t already subscribed to Clubhouse Jr. Magazine, you need to do it.
In this world overrun by technology, there’s nothing like opening your mailbox to find a paper magazine waiting for you, and then snuggling on the sofa with your children to read the stories together.
(Warm chocolate chip cookies would perfect the experience. Just sayin.’)
Clubhouse Jr. Magazine has graciously allowed me to reprint the story here in my blog since the story is only available to subscribers of the magazine — which is just another reason why you want to subscribe. Think of all the stories, articles, and puzzles you’re child is missing out on every month by not subscribing.
