Mary, Did You Know by Pentatonix
If this doesn’t start the Christmas season out just right, then I give up.
“Mary, Did You Know?”
is, hands down,
the best version ever.
(It’s so good, it demanded I use a bigger font to express its greatness.)
I wouldn’t have imagined a comedian could write such a powerful song, but comedian Mark Lowry did it.
Mark wrote Mary, Did You Know? when imagining what questions he’d ask Mary if he were sitting down with her over a cup of coffee.
Until the first time I heard this song, I’d never thought to wonder what it was like to raise the Son of God.
I don’t know why it hadn’t occurred to me to wonder. I’m sort of embarrassed by that.
I didn’t wonder before.
I’m mesmerized by the thought.
Think about it. Could there really ever have been a chance that Mary questioned if she’d really given birth to the son of God?
Not only did an angel come and give both Mary and Joseph the big news beforehand, BUT she knew better than anyone that Jesus’ birth was a miracle birth. She knew she’d never been with a man.
I wonder what she and Jesus talked about as He grew up, particularly when it was just the two of them talking late into the night.
Think of all those questions we store up in our brain that we’re going to “ask God when I get to heaven.”
She didn’t have to wait. He was right there for thirty-three years. Imagine that.
Imagine all she came to know and understand before she even stepped into heaven.
She’d been told by Simeon that Jesus was appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and that a sword would pierce her soul, and yet, how could she really understand the crucifixion and resurrection before they happened?
I wonder as He depended on her as a child, if she understood how much all of life depended on Him.
I wonder as He grew, did she watch and wait in expectant anticipation for Him to save the world? What did she even think that would look like?
And I wonder how much He prepared her for the pain she’d face as her beloved Son — God’s Son — faced the cross.
What an honor and responsibility she carried as she carried the Creator of the universe and raised the Savior of the world.
What will you wonder as you listen to Pentatonix’s version of “Mary, Did You Know?”
Merry Christmas everyone.

A slightly different version of this article was originally posted in December 2014. Since Pentatonix’s version of “Mary, Did You Know?” is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, I wanted to repost it. I didn’t think you’d mind.
