Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you.” I said, “Huh?”

Jean Wilund : April 22, 2016 9:48 am : Blog, Resources for Adults

If you've ever wanted to understand Jesus' parable of the Vine and the Branches, you've found the right place. David Tryon explains it well. (www.JeanWilund.com)

Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you.” I said, “Huh?”

Then He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

That sounded important, yet still my response was, “Huh?”

Maybe if I’d lived on a vineyard in Italy this would’ve made sense, but I grew up outside of Atlanta, GA, better known for peaches, peanuts and red clay.

I couldn’t wrap my brain around how one could actually “abide in Christ.” Until . . . David Tryon and his article “The Vine and the Branches.”

Tryon made sense of this confusing, but life-changing truth.

I re-wrote all of it into more modern English, but I have no idea where it’s disappeared to, so I’m including the version my dear friend and mentor Grace gave me years ago.

Yes, this is long, but I didn’t want to leave any of it out for those of you who, like me, desperately want this truth to sink in and make a difference.

For those who don’t have the time to delve into this long article, I’ll be addressing this in much shorter clips soon, but please consider studying this. It changed me.

If God can use this to change me, why would He not do the same for you?

 THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES

There are many Christians, struggling to live the Christian life, who have never discovered where the strength to live that life is to be found.

There are many earnest believers, young and old, who are continually being disappointed and cast down because they are finding their own resources so inadequate to meet the demands of real Christian living.

There are hundreds of Christians of all ages who are hungering and thirsting after a fuller, deeper life than that which they now experience. more »

Devotional for Busy Women: Hungry for God . . . Starving for Time by Lori Hatcher (Buy it today!)

Devotional for Busy Women: Hungry for God . . . Starving for Time by Lori Hatcher (Buy it today!)

Busy women still need to eat, but sometimes a full-course meal doesn’t fit into the schedule.

A power bar will, though!

Busy women also need to spend daily time at the feet of God in His Word, but sometimes that time doesn’ fit into the schedule either.

Hungry for God … Starving for Time, Five-Minute Devotions for Busy Women fits perfectly, though!

And it’s here just in time for Christmas gifts — and for your own busy Christmas season.

When I asked Lori Hatcher, my friend, editor, and author of Hungry for God, Starving for Time, Five-Minute Devotion for Busy Women, if I could introduce you to her excellent devotional, she graciously sent me a copy of one of the devotions found in her book.

It challenged and encouraged me — like the other devotions in her book.

Yes, I already have my copy!

Enjoy this free sneak peek, and then check out her link below. Y more »

The Ten Fingers for Handling the Word of God.

The Ten Fingers for Handling the Word of God.

Have you ever said, “I just can’t seem to get excited about studying the Bible?”

Come on. I know you hate to confess it, too, but surely we’ve ALL uttered that feeling at one time or another.

In those times, the Word of God has become “dry as dust, dead in our hands.”

How can that be? more »

Today’s Bible Study Tip #7 — Understanding The Big Story of the Bible

I Love to Tell the Story Seminar @stronghandsenterprises.com

I remember where I was when I saw the Big Story of the Bible for the first time.

Maybe you’re like me and grew up thinking the Bible is just a bunch of different stories involving God combined into one big book.

I had no idea it’s all one continuous story: The Story of Redemption — God redeeming man from sin and restoring him back into a relationship with Himself.

Of course I knew that the Bible teaches about God redeeming man, but I thought the story went like this:

Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. A lot of other unrelated stuff happened for a long time, and then Jesus was born to redeem man from sin. Jesus went to heaven and will return one day. The End.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who thought this! more »

Today’s Bible Study Tip #6 — The Blue Letter Bible: 7 Reasons to Use this On-Line Bible Study Tool

Bible Study Tip 6: Use the Blue Letter Bible

Seven Reasons to Use this Bible Study Tool: Blue Letter Bible

I love BlueLetterBible.com!

The Blue Letter Bible (BLB) is as valuable to my Bible study as my pen — and I love my pen.

(That’s “the pen” in the photo above. It’s the Zebra nuSpiral CC Ballpoint Pen – 0.7  mm — my favorite pen for writing very small, clean lines in the margins. That was a Bible Study Tip freebie for you.)

When I study a chapter of the Bible, I first read through it carefully in my Bible word by word, phrase by phrase and make my own personal notes with my awesome pen.

My studying will often produce questions I can’t answer, so I turn to my current favorite resource: BlueLetterBible.com. Plus I like to read what the professionals have to say anyway.

Understanding and Applying the Bible

Jean Wilund : February 19, 2014 10:11 pm : Resources for Adults

It’s in!

McQuilkin's Book

My copy of Robertson McQuilkin’s book
Understanding and Applying the Bible is here!

From the back of the book:

Why do even the sincerest students of God’s Word sometimes find it dry or confusing? Too often, Robertson McQuiklin suggests, it’s because they don’t know how to read it.

In his classic introduction to Bible study, McQuilkin shows everyday believers how to navigate the Bible’s genres and plumb its thought structures with accuracy, experiencing afresh living encounters with the inspired Word.

Newly revised and updated, Understanding and Applying the Bible, also examines the most common errors in Bible reading.

In the end, McQuilkin maintains Scripture can be understood by anyone, simply by following a set of straightforward and time-tested principles.

So come, dive deeply into God’s Word . . .

Blue Letter Bible Website

Jean Wilund : February 19, 2014 9:44 pm : Resources for Adults

Blue Letter BibleI’m always looking for great on-line resources for studying the Bible. Not only is it a time-saver, but it’s a money-saver.

The Blue Letter Bible website provides numerous study tools in one place. Here are just a few tools available:

  • Daily Bible Reading Plans
  • Daily Devotionals
  • Scripture Index
  • Bible Commentaries
  • Harmony of the Gospels
  • Bible Dictionaries
  • Bible Encyclopedias

What interests me most, however, is what happens when you type in a Bible verse and hit “search.”

You’re taken to the verse (and all those around it), and then with a simple click on the actual verse in question, you’ll see the original Greek or Hebrew, it’s meaning, and pronunciation.

Another click away and you’re given the option to check out the verse in various translations, cross-references, numerous commentaries on the verse, and a Bible dictionary.

There’s much more to this site that I’m only now discovering. If you’d like to visit the site, click on the link below:
