Yesterday I celebrated my birthday. I turned 51.
(Everybody sing: Happy Birthday to me! Happy Birthday to me!…)
Naturally, as I’m aging (gracefully?) I reflect on what I’d like to do better as I move forward — what I’d do differently if I had it to do over again.
Besides a very unfortunate hairstyle choice my freshman year in high school, I think this song “Fix My Eyes” by the band for Kings & Country expresses what I’d do differently quite well.
It also makes we want to dance — that’s a win-win!
Want to know the main thing I’d do better?
I’d consistently reflect to others the One True God —
a God worth believing in.
I’m not talking about being perfect. I’m fine with not being perfect.
I didn’t used to be fine with it, but then God taught me what grace really means, and I’ve been hooked on it ever since.
(Wisdom comes with age. I wish it came with grey hair. I would have had tons of wisdom before I was thirty.)
In my reflecting, I had to admit that way too often, my words described a faithful and true God, but my life described a God who might or might not be there for you, who might or might not provide for you.
We’ve all heard the phrase: Your actions speak so loud I can’t hear a word you’re saying.
That’s basically the message of this song!
What do my actions speak of?
Fear, grumbling, and complaining speaks of a God who can’t be fully trusted. A god I wouldn’t want anyone to follow.
Confident, restful, and expectant faith speaks of a God who is able and willing. A God I want to follow. The one true God I want my children to follow.
What I’m talking about is waking up every day with the confident, peaceful assurance that God is not only in control, but He’s completely trustworthy and faithful — and then living like I believe that truth.
Living life revealing the peaceful confidence that I can go where ever God calls me to go and do whatever He calls me to do without fear.
Isaiah 41:10 “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Living life revealing the peaceful confidence that I can give generously and cheerfully as God directs without worry for my family’s needs.
2 Corinthians 9:6,8 “But this I say, He which sows sparingly shall reap sparingly; and he which sows bountifully shall reap also bountifully…And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
Living life revealing the peaceful confidence that I can live my life for God and others without grumbling or complaining.
I John 3:16 “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
This year I’m determined to fix my eyes on the one true God and live like I actually believe everything I know to be true about Him.
What about you?
