Who’s Supreme This Week?

The College Football Playoff Committee deliberated for hours. Last night they presented their decision on who’s supreme on November 1, 2016.

Alabama is the supreme college football team in the nation. This week.

Next week it could be Clemson (Yay!) or Michigan. Or an unexpected sleeper school. It just depends on how the teams perform and the committee looks at their performance and talent.

Thankfully that’s not the way God works. There’s no committee to determine who’s supreme in the universe this week.

God alone is supreme forever.

To say that God is supreme means no one and nothing is greater than God. No one even matches Him.

He’s it — The Supreme One.

Could Be A Problem For Us

By its very definition, there can only be one who’s supreme. But, starting with Adam and Eve, we all want to be supreme, too.

It’s not like we’re asking to be The Supreme God — although some probably are.

I don’t want the run the whole world. Just my world.

And I’m happy to share power with God, so long as He agrees to fulfill my every whim.

I’ll even give Him all the glory. I don’t really care about the glory. I just want the life I want — the one where all my loved ones and I are healthy and happy always.

Fortunately, God Doesn’t Share His Supremacy

It’s a good thing for us that God doesn’t share His supremacy. The consequences could be cataclysmic because no one else is perfect in nature.

Traits like wisdom, righteousness, grace, mercy, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control matter. A lot.

Look at Greek mythology. It never ends well when there’s more than one god.

Knowing God is Supreme Makes a Difference Today

Knowing God is supreme gives us freedom to face each day with confidence. We can stand on the unshakeable foundation that no matter which insufferable person or what overwhelming situation is against us, the One who’s supreme over all is for us. (Romans 8:31)

If God weren’t supreme, Satan could effectively box God out of our lives. He could interrupt God’s good plans and purposes for us. He could and would destroy our lives.

But God is supreme, and therefore He’s able to work and move in any life regardless of Satan’s best efforts.

God makes even Satan’s evil plans serve His good purposes.

No One Can Force God’s Hand

God is able to save, restore, redeem, and provide for anyone, anywhere, and no one can stop Him.

He’s able to take your worst nightmare and work in it to bring you an incredible blessing, and nothing can stand in His way.

Not even you.

God may choose to withhold an “obvious” blessing, but no one can force His hand.

The popular, and false, teaching of Prosperity Gospel preachers lead us to believe we can think, pray, or do the right thing, and God is then compelled to bless us.

Not so.

No one forces God’s hand. Ever.

He chooses to bless because He loves us and knows what’s best in every situation and every life.

God’s Word on God’s Supremacy:

“Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me” (Isaiah 46:9 NASB).

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all” (I Chronicles 29:11 ESV).

“and he said, ‘O LORD, the God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You’” (2 Chronicles 20:6 NASB).

“That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:18 NASB).

For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens” (Psalm 96:4-5 NASB).

God is Supreme. This gives us confidence especially in today's world. #KnowingGod #BibleStudy Click To Tweet
